Text 5 Nov Golden Section

What IS the Golden Section?

Definition(s):

  • The Golden Section is a ratio based on a phi (Φ). The Golden Section is also known as the Golden Mean, Golden Ratio and Divine Proportion.  It is a ratio or proportion defined by the number Phi ( = 1.618033988749895… ).
  • Is closely connected with the Fibonacci series and has a value of (5 + 1)/2
  • The Golden Section numbers are :

(φ) ±0·61803 39887… and (Φ)±1·61803 39887…( (derived from Fibonacci Numbers)

How can one derive the Golden Section?

  • It can be derived with a number of geometric constructions, each of which divides a line segment at the unique point where:

the ratio of the whole line (A) to the large segment (B)

is the same as

the ratio of the large segment (B) to the small segment (C).

  • In other words, A is to B as B is to C.
  • This occurs only where A is 1.618 … times B and B is 1.618 … times C.

AC/AB = BC/AC = (φ)

You know how I define the economic and social classes in this country? The upper class keeps all of the money, pays none of the taxes. The middle class pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there just to scare the shit out of the middle class, keep ‘em showing up at those jobs.
